This has been a beautiful day! It
has been warm and nice. I have been out a good deal to day. I have been sewing
on my waist to day. I have got it almost done. I took the last of my quinine
pills to day.
Rob is still at the Houchens’ to
work. Billy has been starting hop poles all day, and Pa has been cutting them
in the Hastings’ wood.

Niece Notes: Hop poles are wooden poles stuck in the ground to help hop vines grow. Although today hops are largely associated with beer, in the past they also had various medicinal properties and uses and were found in typical medicine cabinets.
