Friday, April 3, 1868

This has been another cold and windy day. I can not go out again to day. I am trying to sew a little. I have been piecing some blocks.

Melia went down town to night, and she got me 2 yards of calico to make me a waist. It was a shilling a yard and she got 9 yards of another hand [?] to make aprons.

Niece notes: A "waist" was a blouse.

  1. Did they use shillings in Michigan at that time? I know there wasn't really a federal money system yet, right?

A different hand means a different weight or feel to the fabric, I believe.

    1. Yep, I think shillings were well in use then and there, though I'm not sure where they fit in with the rest of the currency.
