Saturday, June 20, 1868

This has been a very windy day, and cold. We went down town. Floyd and Add and me went to Tom’s. They are all well. I got me a nice fan and a pair of mitts. The fan was 30¢, and the Mitts was 50¢. Julia Palmer and Nettie Greenam rode up with us to Mr. McLlemas’. Add bought a pair of gaiters for herself. They were 200 dollars[1]. We did not go down till afternoon.

[1] This is what she wrote, but I agree that if this is right, this must be the most expensive pair of gaiters ever bought by a small-town woman in the 1800s, or possibly ever!
